What I learned, Improvement, Wish

What I Learned My favourite thing about Usrah is how it helps me ground myself with Islamic knowledge. Being a BENL student, it's not often we discuss Islamic terms and teachings which also means our knowledge on Quran and sunnah is a little rustic. Being "forced" to relearn the basics and revisit some of the verses and hadith that I used to memorize is a welcomed feeling. I especially appreciate the videos our Naqibah shared because, to be honest, I wouldn't have watched those videos by myself.  All that said, the biggest thing I learned from Usrah is how important it is to revisit even the basics of Islam even if we think we still remember them from school. Firstly because a refresher might be needed and secondly, we can see them in a more mature and critical way now that we are adults. Because of this, we don't actually relearn the exact same thing. We are learning new things because of the fresh perspectives that we now have.  Improvement I think a more clear ...

My Contribution - CCUB 2621 Section 204

I'm not the most outspoken person in the class, much less online classes and because of that, I haven't been able to contribute much as an individual. Therefore, I was more than glad to help present our group poster for the role-play assignment. Our topic is The Benefits of Having Good Niyyah and I was one of the presenters along with two others. The rest of the members had gathered the content and created the poster. Giving a presentation doesn't really come naturally for me so I was rather nervous and might have sounded monotonous but that aside, I'm glad that I managed to talk about what is niyyah, its importance and even told a story regarding this topic. Not to toot my own horn, but I think my groupmates and I did a pretty decent job. In summary of what I presented, having a clear and good niyyah when performing any actions helps us be on the right track and makes sure we are rewarded for our good actions as long as we do it lillahi ta'ala. It's such an eas...

Reflection 3.0 - CCUB 2621 Section 204

A Really Hard Test (Friday Sermon) by Nouman Ali Khan This khutbah focuses on verse 11 until 14 of Surah At-Taghabun. Nouman Ali Khan started his sermon by reminding us that it is important to look at the content of the Quran both through a specific verse and its meaning, and as a whole such as the relation from one verse to another. This is extremely important to keep in mind as he dissected the mentioned verses. The first major takeaway in my opinion is the reminder that the word “ musibah ” can refer to good things and bad things because both can be used to test us in this world. For example, family relations and friendships are good things especially when they can offer a listening ear at times of difficulties. However, this in of itself can also be a trial to Muslims because we should not put our dependence on other humans above our dependence of Allah S.A.W. He is the One who gives us a trial, and He is the only One who can guides us out of the trouble as long as we have ima...

Khutbah: Don't Live an Empty Life by Nouman Ali Khan The tafsir of Surah Luqman as told in this khutbah focuses on the relationship between humans. It starts with warning us against making others feel belittled by dismissing them. On this, Nouman Ali Khan gave a beautiful advice regarding human interactions where we should treat others with respect and be careful to not disrespect them. What’s even more interesting, but sometimes overlooked, is that a silent treatment or something as miniscule as a sigh can bring humiliation to a person. For example, if a friend comes to me to talk about a problem she has with me, and I simply ignore her without an explanation, she might have the impression that her problems are invalidated. Not only will that make her feel belittled, it can also put a dent in our friendship. As a result, she might keep a distance from me. Following this, the khatib explained how this connects to the next part of the verse by breaking down the meaning behind the wo...

How Duaa Works - Khutbah by Nouman Ali Khan This is a very insightful khutbah by Nouman Ali Khan on duaa . Even for me personally, sadly enough sometimes I feel discouraged to make duaa because I don’t feel deserving of Allah’s help and would end up digging myself even deeper into my problems. This khutbah helps me see things from a different perspective and in a way eases me of my worries to some extent. What I understand is that we don’t make duaa to demand for help from Allah. It is frankly rude of us, as mere servants, to demand something from our Creator. Duaa , as the root word in Arabic suggests, means to call to Allah and to communicate our emotions to Him. We beg for His help and the reality is our duaa may or may not be granted. And this does not have anything to do with the question of if our duaa deserves to be granted. As the khatib mentioned, it is evident from the stories mentioned in the Quran that even the prophets and other solihin did not get some of their du...
